Why Do Guys Cheat On Their Wives?

You thought you had something solid. He came home every night. He kissed your forehead. He told you he loved you. And then, he cheated.

Now you’re stuck in the swirl of emotions: rage, heartbreak, confusion. You keep asking the same question over and over again: Why do guys cheat on their wives? And maybe deeper still: How could he say that he loves me, and still cheat on me? What does this mean for my marriage? For me? For women? The questions go on and on.

At Marriage Quest, we’ve sat with hundreds of couples in your exact shoes. Some come in with decades of history. Some show up freshly cracked open from an affair. Some come looking for clarity. Others come because they’ve hit their breaking point. All come wanting one thing: to stop spinning in confusion and figure out what’s next.

This is the conversation most couples don’t know how to have alone. We’ve sat with hundreds of couples facing this exact crisis.

“If He Loves Me, Why Did He Cheat?”

This is the emotional knife that twists: He said he loves me… but he still did this. And let’s be real—that contradiction can make you feel insane.

But here’s what we’ve seen, again and again: love alone doesn’t prevent cheating. Men can love their wives and still betray them. Not because they’re evil. Not always because they were planning it. But because something—often unspoken, ignored, or buried—wasn’t being dealt with.

Cheating isn’t usually about a better body or a more exciting sex life. It’s about unmet needs, emotional immaturity, stress, escapism, or trying to feel wanted again. That doesn’t excuse it. But it might explain it.

Some men cheat because:

  • They feel emotionally invisible at home.
  • They’re struggling with their own aging, masculinity, or self-worth.
  • They’re disconnected from the marriage and don’t know how to repair it.
  • They’re using sex or attention to fill a void they don’t understand.

Others cheat not because they’ve fallen out of love—but because they’ve fallen out of connection, and don’t know how to find their way back.

Why Do Guys Cheat On Their Wives?

The reasons are layered. It’s rarely just one thing. Let’s break down some of the most common root causes we see in our retreats:

1. Emotional Disconnection

Men often don’t know how to name their emotional needs, so they act them out. If the emotional bond in the marriage has frayed, they may look for that intimacy elsewhere—sometimes without even realizing what they’re chasing.

2. Sexual Dissatisfaction

Frequency isn’t always the issue at heart. It’s about feeling desired. Some men cheat to feel sexually alive again, especially when physical intimacy has become perfunctory, nonexistent, or filled with resentment.

3. Identity Crisis

Midlife can be brutal. We’ve worked with men facing retirement, empty nests, health scares, and the creeping fear of “Is this all there is?” Cheating becomes a misguided attempt to reclaim vitality, youth, or excitement.

4. Unprocessed Resentment

If a man feels consistently criticized, dismissed, or ignored—and those issues go unresolved—he might use infidelity as a passive-aggressive way to express pain. It’s toxic, but it’s a form of acting out what he hasn’t been able to say out loud.

5. Avoidance of Conflict

Some men cheat instead of confronting difficult truths: that they’re unhappy, that the marriage needs repair, or that they don’t know how to ask for help. Affairs are, in some ways, easier than telling the truth. At least at first.

How Common Is Cheating In Marriage?

More common than you think—and more complicated than most people want to admit.

According to the NIH, 25% of married men admit to having extramarital affairs though the numbers are probably higher. But that number doesn’t capture the emotional affairs, micro cheating—secret flirtations, or other betrayals of trust that don’t fit neatly into a “yes or no” box.

Infidelity isn’t just a statistic. Instead, it’s a wound that runs deep—and a wake-up call. And no, it doesn’t always mean the marriage is over. But it does mean things have to change.

Are We Just Supposed To Accept That Cheating Is Normal?

There’s this dangerous narrative out there—especially around men—that says, “Guys cheat, that’s just how it is.”

Let’s be clear: we don’t advocate or accept that, and you shouldn’t either.

Cheating might be common. But it doesn’t have to be expected. And it sure as hell doesn’t have to be tolerated without question. If we chalk it up to “boys will be boys,” we miss the deeper opportunities for healing and growth. Affairs aren’t random—they’re signals. Painful ones. And when couples are willing to look at those signals together, they can rebuild something better than what was broken.

But only if both people are willing to show up, tell the truth, and do the work.

Over the past 30 years, we have sat with countless couples trying to answer this very question. Why would a man cheat on a woman he says he loves? Some come looking for clarity. Others come because they’ve hit their breaking point. All come wanting one thing: to stop spinning in confusion and finally face the truth.

Do I Have To Give My Husband A Pass For Cheating?

Absolutely not.
You don’t need to “be the bigger person.” You don’t need to forgive on someone else’s timeline. And you definitely don’t need to minimize the betrayal to keep the peace.

But here’s the real question: What do you want now?

Giving a “pass” is not the same as choosing to rebuild. Choosing to rebuild means setting boundaries, naming your pain, and deciding—together—what conditions need to exist for the relationship to survive.

Here’s the truth: infidelity is a rupture. It shakes everything. But it also forces couples to stop coasting. To stop avoiding. To finally have the conversations they’ve needed to have for years.

And another truth: spouses who cheat usually attempt to reach out to their partner multiple times first, but they are unsuccessful for a variety of reasons. Marty Klein, among other researchers, talks about how most people want to have sex with their spouse, but it can be difficult to bridge the issues and find a way back to each other.

Some couples come out stronger. Others leave with clarity that it’s time to part. Either way, we believe you deserve support that helps you see the full picture—and make a decision from a place of strength, not desperation. Because you may never accept the question why do guys cheat on their wives and never fully understand it. But the wreckage still needs to be dealt with.
