What are the fees for a retreat?
Couples therapy has grown in popularity, but not all therapists have the same level of experience or time conducting retreats as Dr. H, He’s worked in this intensive way for more than 10 years, following in the footsteps of his parents who pioneered Marriage Quest more than 30 years ago.
We have an 88% recommitment rate for all couples, even those who are considering divorce at the start. This factors into costs when you consider that across the US, couples counseling generally cost $5,000 to $15,000 over the course of a year. Our process is unique in that the fees are the same, but you will achieve results significantly faster, in just 3-4 days.
The next step is a consultation, where we will review your situation to determine how best to support you both. Please know that a non-refundable deposit is required to book your marriage retreat, so it’s best to attend with your partner. If that’s not possible we can still address your questions and scheduling needs. All of this, and more, are covered during your initial consultation with Dr. H.
Does insurance cover a marriage counseling retreat?
No. Insurance only pays for some traditional models of care such as weekly individual therapy. Many couples come to see us because the slow pace of traditional therapy has not worked for them or even hurt their relationship more.
Is this a group program?
No. We only work with one couple at a time so we can focus on your specific issues and goals. This allows us to achieve better results for you in a short period of time.
Where are your marriage retreats located?
Our retreats are located in St Johnsbury, Vermont. Please ask us about local accommodations if you are traveling to Vermont for your retreat.
Can you help if our marriage is in crisis or on the verge of divorce?
Absolutely. In fact, many couples reach out when they are on the brink of divorce or experiencing a crisis indicates they may be heading for a break up. Everything is welcome here including, ongoing affairs, sexless marriages, parenting challenges, financial stress/infidelity, grief and despair. What can we realistically accomplish in three days?
Couples are often blown away by how much work we can accomplish in such a short time. Have you ever had a really transformative therapy session? Imagine a dozen of them back-to-back over three days. The difference is we know what we are looking for, and therefore, where to go, and we do not waste time getting there. That is why we have always claimed that it is “short term therapy with long term results”. Oh, and did I mention warp speed therapy.
Note: we combine cognitive behavioral with experiential therapy, a powerful combination of treatment modalities that not only teach skills but can heal past trauma.
How do I prepare for a marriage retreat?
When you agree to a date, we send you the Sign-up paperwork to complete with payment information. Upon payment in full or the deposit portion, we give you the Questionnaire for each of you to complete. This helps you to prepare for the retreat and relax from dealing with your current issues (?)
What happens during a marriage retreat?
During your retreat, our focus is on teaching you healthy communication skills and holding both of you accountable to improving your relationship and achieving your goals, whatever that might be. After teaching you the foundational skills, we explore each of your relationship strengths and challenges and offer support and guidance as needed. We have the option of meeting with one of you alone if it’s determined that it will serve your marriage and your personal goals. Since we work with one couple at a time, we have a lot of flexibility.
What are the benefits of marriage retreats?

How can I get my spouse to come for a retreat?
In a loving and peaceful way. Tell them that you love them and share what you are feeling, perhaps lonely, depressed, anxious, unhappy, etc. Don’t ask any questions; just share that you are ready to do something about it and would like nothing more than to repair your relationship with them.
Please note that in order to host a retreat, we need both spouses present and participating. If one spouse decides to not attend or leave early, then the retreat cannot take place nor transferred or refunded.
Do you require a deposit to sign up for a couples retreat?
A deposit is required in order to schedule your private couples retreat. The deposit is equal to half of the total fee. In some cases, should a challenge arise, your deposit can be transferred one time to another retreat date.
What is the cancellation policy for a couples retreat?
If you need to cancel your retreat, please inform your therapist as soon as possible. Deposits for a retreat are non-refundable but in some situations can be transferred. Most therapists have a policy that the entire retreat fee is non refundable within 2 weeks of your start date. If you paid in full, half of the fee can be refunded with at least two weeks notice.
