Can A Marriage Retreat Heal Me From Betrayal Trauma?

couple therapy discussing betrayal trauma at marriage retreat

In my 40+ years of experience as a therapist, I’ve observed many patterns in people’s lives. So I can say with a degree of confidence that it is possible to heal from betrayal trauma. Whether your spouse cheated on you or was involved in an emotional affair, a marriage retreat is an effective way to get your relationship back on the road to recovery. Betrayal trauma lives within the relationship between two partners. So it’s the relationship which requires repair. Unlike individual therapy, a couples retreat focuses on repairing the dynamic between you and your spouse and puts you on the road to healing. Here’s how.

What Is Betrayal Trauma?

Betrayal trauma is the emotional impact you experience due to a breach of trust. While there are many types of betrayal, this article will focus on betrayal between romantic partners within the context of physical or emotional infidelity. A violation of trust can leave you grappling with depression, anxiety, and emotional withdrawal. If left untreated, this trauma can damage your marriage irreparably. You can’t turn back the clock and erase all traces of the betrayal you’ve suffered. In order to heal, you’ll need to take steps to process repair your marriage.

Betrayal Is Rooted In Personal History

Most affairs don’t happen out of the blue. In my four decades of counseling experience, I’ve observed that most people who cheat on their spouses have a personal history with infidelity. Some have lived through parental infidelity which led to divorce. Others have had a previous partner cheat on them, and now they are cheating on their current partner. These patterns and experiences tend to repeat in romantic relationships. This is especially the case when men and women experience midlife crises. Whether you’re dealing with romantic betrayal for the first time or have had a personal history with it, the goal is to heal and stop the cycle once and for all.

Couples Therapy Can Heal Betrayal Trauma

When it comes to recovering from betrayal, I often advise couples that individual therapy isn’t as effective as conjoint (couples) therapy. That’s because infidelity is a couples’ problem, not an individual’s problem. You’re better off working in the context of marriage rather than in the personal realm. And although the trauma may be an individual burden you carry, it takes both partners to release it and free up the relationship blockages it caused.

When you do the repair work together as a couple, your spouse becomes a witness to your hurt, grief, confusion and anger. As such, your spouse is in a much better position to respond with empathy and understanding, and this is cathartic. Your partner may acknowledge how their actions have affected you. They may also express regret about how they’ve handled themselves.

While individual therapy has its place, it’s never as good as having a couples therapist work with both partners in guiding you towards a more intimate, trusting relationship. A therapist is a temporary support who plays a transitory role. Your spouse is your main person in life and for life, when done right. So when you need some extra help to get your relationship back on track, seek out a couples therapist who will help you and your spouse repair and reconnect after an affair.

Why Go On a Marriage Retreat?

Think of a marriage retreat as therapy at warp speed. Instead of the traditional model of weekly sessions, you and your partner spend one or more days in session, focused solely on repairing your relationship. With the traditional pace of weekly sessions, you tend to lose momentum. Just when you’ve made some progress, the session is over and won’t be resumed for another week. At a retreat, you take a step forward and have the advantage of immediately building on it. It’s a much more efficient way to move the therapeutic process forward.

At Marriage Quest, we’ve helped thousands of couples along their healing journey. Our retreats give each couple with whom we work the time and space to work on their relationship over some number of days, without interruptions or distractions. If you’re ready to supercharge your relationship healing process, we’re ready to help every step of the way.
